Overview
Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which fibrous scar tissue, commonly referred to as plaque, develops within the tissues of the penis. This can cause the penis to curve or change shape during an erection and, in some men, may be associated with pain, shortening of the penis, or difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection.
Peyronie’s disease can develop gradually or become noticeable over a relatively short period. The condition may occur following an injury or repeated minor trauma to the penis, although the exact cause is not always clear.
The condition is generally described in two stages. During the active phase, changes in curvature and penile shape may continue to develop, and pain may occur. In the later stable phase, the curvature and plaque may become relatively stable, although symptoms can vary between individuals.
Peyronie’s disease can affect more than physical sexual function. Changes in penile appearance, curvature or sexual performance may also contribute to stress, anxiety, reduced confidence and relationship difficulties.
Ayurveda and Peyronie’s Disease
From an Ayurvedic perspective, an individualised approach may be used to support general men’s health, reproductive wellness, stress management, healthy lifestyle and overall wellbeing. Depending on the individual’s health status and Ayurvedic assessment, supportive measures may include dietary and lifestyle advice, yoga and meditation, selected Ayurvedic herbal formulations and traditional oil-based therapies.
Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease
The symptoms of Peyronie’s disease can develop gradually or, in some cases, become noticeable quite suddenly. The severity and combination of symptoms can vary from person to person.
Common signs and symptoms may include:
Ayurvedic Herbal Formulations & Oils
In Ayurveda, men’s reproductive health and tissue nourishment are traditionally supported through personalised Rasayana, Vajikarana and Vata-balancing approaches. Depending on an individual’s constitution, digestion, age, medications and overall health, an Ayurvedic practitioner may consider selected herbal formulations as part of a broader wellness program.
Examples of traditional formulations that may be considered where clinically appropriate include:
Ayurvedic Oils
Traditional external oils may also be used for general relaxation, muscular comfort and wellbeing, rather than claiming that they remove Peyronie’s plaque.
Depending on the individual’s assessment, an Ayurvedic practitioner may consider oils such as:
Important: These oils should not be vigorously massaged onto penile plaques or used to forcibly straighten, bend or stretch the penis. Any genital application should only be recommended after an appropriate individual assessment.
Because Peyronie’s disease involves structural fibrous tissue, Ayurvedic herbal compounds and oils should be described as complementary supportive care—not as a proven treatment for plaque or penile curvature.
However, it is important to understand that Ayurvedic treatment has not been clinically established as a cure for Peyronie’s disease or as a proven method for removing penile plaque or correcting penile curvature. Ayurvedic care should therefore be considered complementary support and should not replace assessment or treatment by a qualified medical practitioner or urologist.
At Ayurveda Yoga Wellness Clinic (AYWC), Melbourne, our approach is to assess each individual holistically and provide appropriate Ayurvedic wellness support while encouraging patients to obtain conventional medical or urological assessment where indicated.
