Chandanasavam: Ingredients, Uses, Dose & Side Effects
Introduction:
Chanadanasavam is very valuable herbal wine for kidneys and other parts urinary system. It has anti-microbial properties and given in urinary tract infections (UTI). Chandanasavam has cool potency and reduces body heat. It is useful in night falls, burning sensation of urine and dysuria.
Main Ingredients:
Santalum album or heart wood is main ingredient on which Chanadanasavam is named for. Besides this, it also contains Cyperus rotundus, Gmelina arbora, Symplocos racemosa, Rubia cordifolia, Pterocarpus santalinus and Luffa acutangula etc.
Pharmacological action of Chanadanasavam:
In ayurveda modality of health sciences, chanadanasavam destroys heat inside the body and cools the urinary system as well. It is said in ayurveda, excessive heat in the body is one of main factor responsible for night fall. Therefore, it reduces body heat and cures the problem of night fall.
Chanadanasavam gives strength to the urinary organs including kidneys and aids to detoxify both kidneys. Toxins are removed through urine from the kidneys by which kidney’s health is maintained. Chanadanasavam also precludes protein loss in urine so it becomes beneficial in albuminuria.
Chanadanasavam has anti-microbial action. It fights off urinary infections and reduces burning sensation in urine. In clinical experiences of many ayurvedic doctors, it is found that it reduces pus cells in urine and prevents recurrence of frequent urinary tract infections. In chronic and obstinate cases of UTI, Chanadanasavam is prescribed by most of traditional doctors with other organic herbal medicines.
Chanadanasavam also has properties of appetizer due to some herbs that works on balancing gastric secretions and liver functions. The common herb is Cyperus rotundus, which increases appetite. In chronic kidney failure, when patients experiences emaciation and loss of appetite, Chanadanasavam becomes drug of choice for kidney failure.

Side effects and precautions:
There are no adverse effects observed while taking Chanadanasavam. It is quite safer than conventional anti-biotic therapy for urinary tract infections. However, if patient is suffering from diabetes mellitus, Chanadanasavam should not be taken. If patient is hypertensive or other reasons behind kidney failure, Chanadanasavam is beneficial for management of this disease.
